AI agent vs. chatbot: what is the difference and which do you need
A chatbot answers, an AI agent acts. A chatbot holds a conversation and answers questions. An AI agent can also carry out steps in other systems on its own: create an order, send an e-mail, record data or schedule a meeting. Which one your company needs depends on the problem you are solving.
Three generations of “bots”
1. Classic scripted chatbot
The older type of chatbot with predefined questions and buttons. It is cheap and predictable, but as soon as a customer writes something outside the script, it does not understand.
2. AI chatbot
A chatbot built on a language model. It understands everyday language, answers from your materials (website, price list, FAQ) and handles unexpected questions. But it still mainly talks.
3. AI agent
A language model with access to tools and rules. Besides answering, it can solve the task: check an order’s status in the e-shop, change a booking, issue a credit note or hand the case to a colleague with a summary.
Side-by-side comparison
| AI chatbot | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|

| Works with company materials | Yes | Yes |
| Takes actions in systems | No / limited | Yes |
| Multi-step tasks | No | Yes |
| Deployment effort | Lower | Higher (integrations, rules) |
| Typical use | FAQ, information, collecting enquiries | Support, orders, back office |
When an AI chatbot is enough
- Customers mainly ask for information: prices, opening hours, availability, procedures.
- You want to collect enquiries outside business hours too.
- You need a quick, more affordable solution for your website or e-shop.
When an AI agent pays off
- Your team looks up data in systems by hand to answer customers.
- You repeatedly retype data between e-mail, e-shop, CRM and accounting.
- You want requests to be resolved, not just answered.
Recommended approach
Most companies start with an AI chatbot that answers from company materials. Once it is clear what customers ask most often, we give it tools and the chatbot gradually becomes an agent. That way investment only grows where it delivers results.
